Yes, it is highly recommended to apply a “Scotchgard” type protectant to most any carpets. Think of terms of washing your car. If you don’t put a protectant like a wax on afterwards, your car will get dirty almost immediately if taken out on the road or even left in your driveway. That is why a carpet needs a protectant.
How does carpet protector work?
Carpet fibers absorb the mess, creating stains or odors when you spill something on most unprotected carpets. Carpet protection works by repelling dirt from the carpet fibers and preventing them from absorbing the spills.
If you have young children, pets or someone that spells things regularly in your home, it is well worth it to put the protectant on your carpet. If you have high traffic using your carpet, again, it is well worth investing in the protectant.
Benefits of using a carpet protector
There are many benefits of using a carpet protector especially right after you have your carpet professionally cleaned.
- Protects soils and spills on the carpet from becoming stains and makes the next cleaning even more effective.
- It can prolong a carpet’s life.
- Helps prevent wear, and provides ultraviolet protection to reduce fading in sun-exposed carpets.
- Can be especially helpful in high-traffic areas and in homes with children and pets.
- Strong carpet protection repels spills for easier cleanup
- Doesn’t change the look and feel of your carpet
- Limits reappearing spots
- Apply to new or clean carpets, wet or dry
- Simple, one-step application
Carpet warranty
You will want to read your carpet manufacturer’s warranty regarding carpet protectors. Some carpet warranties include specific instructions on whether to add a protector and some may instruct the owner to add carpet protection when the carpets are cleaned, while others restrict it altogether. It just depends on your warranty. Some warranties can be voided if you do not follow their instructions.
How often?
Most homeowners add carpet protection every time they have their carpets professionally cleaned, or every six months, whichever comes first. In high traffic areas, you may need to the protector more often.
Drying time
Drying time varies depending on the temperature and humidity but typically about 2 – 6 hours. After it dries, the carpet should be vacuumed to pick up any white residue left behind.
Carpet type
In general, a carpet protectant can be used on polyester, polyolefin, polypropylene, acrylic, nylon, and colored wool carpets and rugs. It is not recommended for Oriental rugs or white wool.
Auburn Carpet takes great pride in our rug cleaning experience and results. Many area rugs, including “oriental” can be manufactured by hand and using very delicate materials, while some are machine made with synthetic materials. We will inspect your rugs and give you our recommendation of cleaning based on fiber content and construction.
If you are unsure, please give us a call and we are happy to come to your home to inspect and test if necessary. Some synthetic rugs can be cleaned on site, but we prefer to clean delicate items off site in a controlled environment to ensure proper care, cleaning and drying. In our typical “home” service area, we will pick up and deliver your rugs at no additional charge!
